SOCIAL WORK IN POLAND
Scott Hartblay, Prof. in the Social Work Dept. at Elms College, will provide us with insight into a relatively new discipline in Poland, a country in the throes of tremendous social changes - a country he describes as experiencing posttraumatic stress disorder because of events between 1939-89.

GENERAL RESOURCES FOR GENEALOGY AT THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES IN PITTSFIELD
Jointly sponsored by the Irish and Polish Centers at Elms College.
Ms. Jean Nudd, of the Conti Immigration Center, will discuss general resources available in the National Archives (Social Security, Military, etc.) and focus on the 1930 census figures just coming out and made available to the public.

A NON-POLISH PILGRIM IN POLAND
Sr. Ann Daly SSJ, Head of the Academic Resource Center at Elms College, knew little about Poland until her trip this year. She returned with a remarkable understanding of the country and its people. This talk promises to provide listeners with a refreshing look at Poland from a different perspective.

FROM THE 10th CENTURY TO NAPOLEON

Mr. Carl Stoy, an avid enthusiast of Polish military history,
will lecture on the Polish military, a highly respected and
often romanticized institution in Poland. An exhibit of military
miniatures in the Polish Center--this exhibit will continue
through December--will further illustrate this lecture.

I WANT THIS WORLD
Polish American author Margaret Szumowski, Asst. Prof. of English at Springfield Tech. Community College, starts the fall season with a talk about her work and readings from her latest book of poetry based on family history during World War II as well as her own experience in Africa as a hostage of Idi Amin.

An Exhibit: The Polish Military from the 10th century through the Napoleonic Era. This exhibit, from the collection of Mr. Carl Stoy, replaces the long-term folkarts exhibit in the Polish Center at Berchmans Hall.

May 3 and May 4, 2001
Mrs. Irena Gut Opdyke, Polish Catholic Holocaust Rescuer.
Veritas Auditorium/Berchmans Hall. Over 1,300 college, middle and high school students, and adults attended this very special event. Many came from as far as Cape Cod, Rhode Island, Vermont, Connecticut and New York State. This event was supported by a grant from the Chicoppee Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
